Free Speech and Expression: Home

Cornell University Library's guide in support of the 2023-2024 university-wide theme, “The Indispensable Condition: Freedom of Expression at Cornell.”

The Indispensable Condition: Freedom of Expression at Cornell

In April 2023, President Pollack called for a campus-wide theme year focused on “the indispensable condition” of freedom of expression given its critical importance to our democracy and higher education.

The free exchange of ideas underpins everything Cornell does as a university community — educating new generations of global citizens, pursuing novel research and scholarship, and advancing the public good. Throughout this theme year, Cornellians everywhere are invited to challenge personal beliefs, to consider new ideas and unfamiliar perspectives, and to foster discussion around core freedoms for democracy and higher education. Join us as we explore the history, significance, and challenges of these foundations of the Cornell experience through a yearlong series of creative and scholarly discussions and events.

The Library and the Press’s Contribution to University’s Free Expression Initiative

The mission of research libraries and university presses uniquely position us to add value to this University-wide dialogue while we also listen, learn from others, and develop new skills.

The Library and the Press join the Cornell community in activities, bringing our expertise, perspectives, and values to the table. Our programs and events will be shared on this site and in the Cornell events calendar.
